If you have just 48 hours to explore Vientiane, Laos, you’re in for a treat. It’s a small city with a laid-back vibe and plenty of charm, making it ideal for a quick getaway or a stop on your Southeast Asia adventure. Here’s how to make the most of your time in the Lao capital.

Morning at Pha That Luang

Kick off your first day by visiting Pha That Luang, the golden stupa that’s often referred to as the heart of Laos. This brilliant structure gleams in the morning light and holds immense historical and religious significance. It’s also a very peaceful spot so you’ll love the calm energy here. Honestly, it’s one of my favorite places in Vientiane. The surrounding gardens provide a great opportunity for a slow stroll before heading to your next stop.

Afterward, why not grab a bite to eat nearby? Local vendors often sell savory noodle soups or fresh fruits that are an ideal breakfast. If you’re still figuring out where to stay, you can easily find a cozy hotel Vientiane Laos offers near the city center, placing you conveniently close to attractions like this.

Wat Si Saket & Nearby Temples

Next, head to Wat Si Saket, the oldest temple in Vientiane. Unlike some of the larger and more grandiose temples, this one feels refreshingly intimate to me. Its courtyard is lined with thousands of Buddha statues, and something about the atmosphere here feels timeless. You might just find yourself losing track of time admiring the art and architecture.

Not far from Wat Si Saket is the Presidential Palace. While you can’t enter the palace, it’s worth passing by to snap a few photos and marvel at its exterior grandeur.

Lunch

For lunch, look for a small, no-frills eatery serving authentic Lao food. Go for laap, a tangy minced meat salad that’s a national dish, paired with sticky rice. I love the way the flavors of fresh herbs and lime stand out in this meal. You can also try tam mak hoong, a spicy green papaya salad. Don’t worry if it’s too fiery for you, just calm it down with an iced Lao coffee, sweetened generously with condensed milk.

A Mekong Evening

Spend your evening by the Mekong River. It’s the place to be as the sun sets in Vientiane. The riverside promenade gets lively, with locals exercising, vendors selling drinks and snacks, and everyone enjoying the view. Make a beeline for the Night Market, where bright red tents offer everything from clothes to handicrafts and street food.

Here’s a tip, try the grilled fish while you’re here. It’s fresh, flavorful, and melts in your mouth. Add a cold Beerlao to the mix, and you’ve got a classic Vientiane dining experience right by the river. I love it!

Start the Next Morning with Coffee

Day two should start with coffee to wake you up from last night’s beer Lao. Vientiane has a growing coffee culture, and there are plenty of little cafes serving strong Lao brews. My go-to is a shot of espresso served with condensed milk at a small, family-run spot. Pair that with some freshly baked pastries or bread if you need a light breakfast.

Bicycle Rent

Rent a bike and explore Vientiane at your own pace. The city isn’t overwhelming like some other capitals in Asia, so cycling feels safe and relaxing. You can visit smaller, lesser-known temples and enjoy the calm of the streets.

COPE Visitor Centre

For something more thought-provoking, make some time for the COPE Visitor Centre. It highlights the history and ongoing challenges with unexploded ordnance in Laos. It’s an eye-opening experience, and the exhibits are presented in a way that’s both informative and respectful. I didn’t expect this to be such a highlight, but it stayed with me long after my visit.

Wrap up your visit by treating yourself to some sweet snacks from a local bakery. Lao desserts are often simple but delicious, like sweet coconut rice cakes or fried banana fritters. Grab a spot at a café and enjoy your treats with one last view of Vientiane’s lovely streets. You might just find yourself wishing for more time to soak it all in.
